Most Australian businesses send more automated email than they realise: invoices from the accounting system, booking confirmations, contact-form notifications, password resets from the website. By default, many of these go out through a web host’s shared server or a staff mailbox, where they are slow, untracked and likely to land in spam. An SMTP relay fixes that by routing them through infrastructure built for sending.

What Mailpro’s SMTP server does

  • Accepts email from any software that has an SMTP setting, using authenticated connections.
  • Delivers it through managed sending infrastructure with bounce handling.
  • Logs every message, so you can check whether a customer’s invoice was delivered. See SMTP message tracking.
  • Reports opens, clicks and bounces in real time.

Common Australian use cases

  • Accounting and invoicing: invoices and payment reminders, especially at EOFY when volumes rise.
  • WordPress and WooCommerce: order confirmations and form notifications.
  • Booking systems: confirmations for tours, clinics, salons and accommodation.
  • CRMs and ERPs: quotes, notifications and statements.
  • Printers and scanners: scan-to-email devices in offices.

Setup in a few minutes

  1. Create a Mailpro account and SMTP credentials.
  2. In your software’s email settings, enter Mailpro’s SMTP server, port (587 or 465), username and password.
  3. Add Mailpro to your domain’s SPF record and set up DKIM, so receivers can verify that you authorised the relay.
  4. Send a test and check it appears in the log.

Our FAQ on how to send emails with an SMTP server has more detail.

Compliance: SMTP doesn’t change the rules

The Spam Act 2003 covers commercial electronic messages however they are sent. Invoices and password resets are generally not commercial, but if your software adds a promotional banner, the message becomes commercial and needs consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe. If you use SMTP for marketing newsletters, the full Spam Act rules apply.

For Privacy Act purposes, your SMTP provider handles personal information in every message. Mailpro processes and stores it in Switzerland on private infrastructure, outside US jurisdiction, with TLS 1.3 encryption, which helps you document the reasonable steps APP 8 expects before disclosing data offshore.

SMTP or API?
