A newsletter from a Wānaka ski school, a Hawke’s Bay winery and an Auckland accounting firm will look nothing alike, yet all three face the same question: will a reader in Aotearoa open this, or treat it as clutter? In a close-knit market where customers often know the business owner by name, a newsletter that feels generic or overseas-made stands out for the wrong reasons. The design is rarely the hard part. Relevance, tone and trust are.

Mailpro gives New Zealand businesses running email marketing a way to build that newsletter without a designer or a developer, and to send it in a way that keeps you on the right side of the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007.

What a New Zealand newsletter has to get right

  • The calendar is upside down for many templates. Christmas falls in summer, the long school holidays run over December and January, and winter sales land in June to August. Waitangi Day (6 February), ANZAC Day (25 April) and the Matariki public holiday (10 July in 2026, 25 June in 2027) are all moments customers notice, and ANZAC Day in particular calls for a respectful tone rather than a sale.
  • Local voice. NZ English spelling (colour, organise, personalise), plain wording and a friendly register usually land better than hard-sell copy. Te reo Māori greetings such as “Kia ora” or a “Ngā mihi” sign-off are widely used in brand communications; use them because they fit your brand, spell them correctly with macrons, and check anything longer with a fluent speaker.
  • Prices in NZ dollars. If you sell to consumers, show prices the way they will actually pay them, including GST.
  • Phones first. Many readers will open your newsletter on a mobile, sometimes on a patchy rural connection, so light images and a single-column layout matter.

Three ways to build it in Mailpro

Most people start with the drag-and-drop newsletter editor: you place text blocks, images and buttons where you want them and the layout adapts to phone screens. If your agency or in-house developer prefers to work in code, you can write or import HTML newsletters directly. And if you want a head start, choose from more than 600 newsletter templates, then swap in your own colours, logo and photos of your place, your team and your products.

Compliance built into the send

The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007, enforced by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), covers commercial email and text messages sent to, from or within New Zealand. In short, every marketing newsletter needs consent, accurate information about who sent it, and a working unsubscribe facility, and an unsubscribe request takes effect within 5 working days. Keep an unsubscribe link in your newsletter footer and your sender details accurate, and send only to people who agreed to hear from you. Our overview of email marketing law in New Zealand covers consent types and penalties in more detail.

Personalise beyond “Hi first name”

With a small audience, relevance does the heavy lifting. Mailpro lets you segment your contacts by region, interests or purchase history, so a Christchurch customer is not invited to an Auckland store opening and a South Island reader gets the frost warning for their garden, not someone else’s. Dynamic fields let each issue carry the reader’s name, local store or loyalty status. See how personalised newsletters work in practice.

Where your subscriber list lives

Under the Privacy Act 2020, overseen by the Privacy Commissioner, you remain responsible for personal information that a service provider holds on your behalf. Mailpro stores your data in Switzerland on private infrastructure, outside US jurisdiction, and never sells or rents it. Switzerland’s data protection framework is recognised by the European Union as adequate, the same recognition the EU has given New Zealand. More on why Mailpro hosts in Switzerland.

Send, then learn

After each send, campaign statistics show opens, clicks and unsubscribes, so you can see whether your Matariki story outperformed your spring promotion and plan the next issue accordingly.

Mailpro is priced by the number of emails you send, not by the number of contacts you store, which suits seasonal businesses such as tourism operators that mail heavily in peak months and lightly the rest of the year. You can start with 500 free credits.
