Use this template

This English level test assesses a learner's grammar and vocabulary from beginner (A1) to proficient (C2) in about 25 minutes. Questions become gradually harder, from simple verb forms to idiomatic phrasal verbs and advanced structures, and the participant's level is displayed as soon as the test is submitted.

What is this English placement test for?

Language schools, training departments and teachers use this kind of test to put each learner in the right group before a course starts. Each item is a multiple-choice sentence with one gap: “She ___ a teacher” at the start, inversion and the subjunctive near the end. Learners answer without a dictionary and may leave a question blank when they are unsure, which keeps the result honest. The final score is translated into one of six levels aligned with the familiar A1 to C2 scale, so you can organise classes quickly and consistently.

Who is it for?

  • Language schools placing new students before the first lesson
  • HR and training teams assessing staff before a company course
  • Teachers checking the level of a class at the start of the year
  • Associations offering conversation groups to newcomers

How to adapt it in Mailpro

This online test is a scored quiz: each answer is corrected automatically and the result is shown by level band, from A1 – Beginner to C2 – Proficient. The template sets a pass mark of 50% and a 35-minute timer with a warning five minutes before the end; you can change the threshold, the duration, the number of attempts and the bands. Replace or add questions, put your logo and colours, then share the English level test online by link, by QR code or in a Mailpro newsletter. Results arrive in Mailpro, and you can set tags on contacts according to their level to send each group the right course information.

Tips

  • Ask candidates to take the test in one sitting, in a quiet place.
  • Combine the written result with a short oral exchange for borderline cases.
  • Limit attempts if the test is used for placement, so the first result stays meaningful.
  • Review the questions most often missed: they show which points to cover first in class.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official certificate?

No. It gives an indicative level for placement and course planning; it does not replace a recognised English proficiency exam.

Can I add listening or writing tasks?

You can add open questions for a short written answer; these are then reviewed by you rather than scored automatically.

How long does it take?

About 25 minutes for most learners, within the 35-minute limit.
