New Zealand has a busy software scene for its size: booking platforms for tour operators, ordering systems for trade suppliers, membership apps for gyms and clubs, and online stores shipping from Invercargill to Kaitaia. Each of them sends email: confirmations, receipts, reminders, password resets and, alongside those, newsletters. Mailpro’s email API lets your application trigger those messages directly, while your marketing team keeps using the same account for email marketing.

What the API does

  • Send emails from your application. Trigger a booking confirmation the moment a guest pays for a Milford Sound cruise, or send a campaign built from your product catalogue. Each send returns an identifier you can check later.
  • Download statistics. Pull opens and clicks by country for any campaign into your own reporting. See API statistics for examples.
  • Build lists automatically. Create lists in the Mailpro CRM from what customers do in your system, such as buyers of a product line or members whose renewal is due.
  • Synchronise address books. Keep contacts in Mailpro aligned with your CRM or e-commerce platform so that nobody is emailed from an outdated list.
  • Synchronise profiles. Push profile updates, such as a new address or a changed preference, from your system to Mailpro and back.

Transactional or commercial? It matters in New Zealand

The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 applies to commercial electronic messages. According to guidance from the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), a message that facilitates, completes or confirms a transaction the recipient already agreed to, such as an order confirmation or delivery notice, is not a commercial electronic message. Add a promotional offer to that receipt, though, and it may become one, which brings in the consent, sender identification and unsubscribe rules. Keep transactional templates factual, send marketing through consented lists, and read our overview of email marketing law in New Zealand. The transactional email guide covers design and deliverability.

Time zones and timestamps

New Zealand is among the first countries to start each day. Store timestamps in UTC and convert for display: NZST is UTC+12, NZDT is UTC+13 from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April, and the Chatham Islands are 45 minutes ahead of the mainland. Getting this wrong is how “your booking is tomorrow” emails end up arriving a day late.

API or SMTP?

If your platform already has an email setting that asks for a server, port and password, Mailpro’s SMTP server may be quicker to connect. If you want delivery status, statistics and contact management from code, the API is the better fit. Our API vs SMTP comparison goes through the trade-offs.

Data residency for New Zealand agencies

Under the Privacy Act 2020, when a provider holds personal information purely on your behalf, the Privacy Commissioner’s guidance is that you generally remain responsible for it, rather than it being treated as a disclosure overseas. What you should check is how that provider protects the data. Mailpro runs on private infrastructure in Switzerland, outside US jurisdiction, uses TLS 1.3 in transit, and never sells or rents data. Read more about why Switzerland.

Documentation and resources for developers

All the technical documentation of the Mailpro APIs lives on the developer portal: Email API v2, CRM API v3 and SMS API, described endpoint by endpoint (OpenAPI), in English and five other languages.

  • Delivery tracking of transactional emails — every single send returns an identifier; GET /Send/{id}/Status tells you whether it is queued, sent, delivered, deferred or bounced. In detail.
  • Webhooks — three directions: Mailpro notifies you (email delivered, bounce, new contact…), your automations call your tools, an external tool triggers an automation. The three types of webhooks · reference.
  • Frequently asked questions — authentication, limits, attachments, Zapier / Make / n8n: API & Webhooks FAQ.
