In a country where active mobile connections outnumber people (DataReportal counted connections equal to 105% of the population in its Digital 2026 report), a text message is the most direct way to reach someone. That makes SMS powerful, and it also means it should be used carefully. Here is how Vincentian businesses can use it well with Mailpro.

When SMS beats email

  • Time-critical updates: a ferry to Bequia is delayed, a boat trip moves because of the weather, a pick-up time changes.
  • Hurricane season: from 1 June to 30 November, a short text telling customers you are closing, or reopening, reaches them even when they are away from email.
  • Event days: band pick-up times for Vincy Mas, last tickets for a Nine Mornings concert, a restaurant’s table available tonight.
  • Reminders: appointments, payment due dates, school notices.

Longer content, such as a season brochure or a detailed offer, belongs in email. Many businesses combine the two: an email with the details and a short text to prompt people to open it. Our article on SMS and email campaigns explains the combination.

Numbers and networks

Vincentian mobile numbers use the North American Numbering Plan: country code +1 and area code 784, written in international format as +1 784 followed by seven digits. Store numbers in that format so messages route correctly, and so contacts abroad with US, Canadian or UK numbers are handled too. The phone country code list helps when importing mixed lists. SVG has two mobile operators, Digicel and Flow, and telecoms are regulated by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC) within the ECTEL framework.

SVG has no law specific to marketing SMS. Treat it as a permission-based channel anyway: ask separately for SMS consent, identify your business in each message and tell people how to stop receiving texts. If you text contacts in Canada, the United States or Europe, their national rules apply. The FAQ on SMS laws and restrictions gives an overview, and collecting SMS opt-ins suggests wording.

Sender names

Where networks allow it, you can show your business name instead of a number. Support varies by destination and operator, so check before a big campaign. See how to configure an SMS sender name.

Writing a good text

A standard SMS has a limited number of characters, and longer texts are split and charged as several messages. The FAQ on the SMS character limit explains the details. Start with your business name, give the key fact and one action, and keep links short. Send during the day, in the recipient’s time zone: a 6 a.m. text about a ferry change is welcome, a 10 p.m. promotion is not.
