SMS works best when a message is short, useful and time-sensitive. That describes a lot of what businesses in Antigua and Barbuda need to say: a boat is leaving the dock in an hour, a restaurant has a table free tonight, a store is closing early because a storm is approaching. Whether a campaign is effective depends less on the channel than on matching the message to it.

Why the conditions favour SMS

Phones are everywhere. According to DataReportal’s Digital 2025 report, Antigua and Barbuda had around 202,000 mobile connections at the start of 2025, about 215% of the population, and 77.6% of residents used the internet. Many residents keep two SIM cards, and a text reaches either one without depending on an app. Visitors, who make up a large share of many businesses’ customers, keep their home numbers and still receive international SMS.

Five situations where SMS earns its place

1. Hurricane season updates

From June to November, businesses need to tell customers about closures, reopening times and rebooking options fast. After a storm, mobile service often comes back before home broadband, and a text is readable on any handset.

2. Regatta and marina logistics

During Antigua Sailing Week, held at the end of April (22 to 26 April in 2026), and the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta the week before, crews and shore teams need practical information: dock changes, shuttle times, party venues. SMS cuts through a busy inbox.

3. Carnival and Caribana offers

Antigua Carnival runs from late July to Carnival Tuesday in early August, and Barbuda’s Caribana is held over the Whitsun weekend in Codrington. Time-limited offers on costumes, fetes and transport are natural SMS content.

4. Arrivals and reservations

A welcome text when a guest lands at V. C. Bird International Airport, a table confirmation, or a reminder for a snorkelling trip to Cades Reef reduces no-shows.

5. Payment and appointment reminders

Clinics, utilities, insurers and professional firms use SMS for reminders that customers act on quickly.

When email is the better tool

SMS is poor at storytelling. Villa photography, a full events calendar or a detailed investment-programme update belongs in an email newsletter. Many Antiguan businesses combine the two: email for the rich content and SMS for the nudge. Mailpro’s article on combining SMS and email campaigns shows how.

Measuring effectiveness

Track delivery with SMS statistics, then look at outcomes you can count: bookings made with a text-only code, calls received, tables filled. In Mailpro’s own customer survey, users rated SMS deliverability 9.8/10, but your own results depend on list quality and consent.

Keep it lawful and welcome

Under Antigua and Barbuda’s Data Protection Act, 2013, a mobile number is personal data and you need consent to use it for marketing. Get a separate SMS opt-in, identify your business in the message, and honour stop requests. When you text overseas numbers, their national rules also apply; the FAQ on SMS laws and restrictions summarises them. This is general information, not legal advice.
