Email verification (also called email validation) is the process of checking whether an email address is real and able to receive mail before you send to it. It typically tests the address in stages — syntax, domain and MX records, and whether the mailbox actually exists — so invalid or risky addresses can be removed from a list in advance.

How email verification works

Email verification runs several checks: syntax (is the address well-formed), domain and MX record lookups (can the domain receive mail), and a mailbox probe that asks the receiving server whether the address exists. Addresses that fail are flagged as invalid, and catch-all or role addresses are marked risky. Verifying at signup and cleaning your list periodically is the most reliable way to cut hard bounces before a campaign goes out.

Why email verification matters

A clean, verified list protects deliverability and sender reputation: mailbox providers treat a high bounce rate as a spam signal, so unverified lists get filtered even when the content is legitimate.
