SMS can be very effective in Jamaica, but not for every message. The honest answer depends on what you are trying to achieve, who you are texting and whether they asked to hear from you. This page looks at the conditions that make texts work in the Jamaican market, the situations where they don’t, and how to test the channel without guessing.

Why texts have an advantage here

Reach beyond data plans. Jamaica has more mobile connections than people: 3.06 million cellular connections in early 2025, equal to 108 percent of the population (DataReportal, 2025). Not every connection has mobile data at every moment, particularly on prepaid plans, but SMS arrives regardless. For time-critical messages that is a real advantage over email or social media.

Resilience in bad weather. When Hurricane Melissa struck western Jamaica as a Category 5 storm on 28 October 2025, the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall on the island (US National Hurricane Center), businesses needed to tell customers about closures and reopenings while power and internet were disrupted. Short texts are often the message that gets through in those conditions. Preparing SMS templates before each hurricane season is simple insurance.

A familiar channel. Jamaicans already receive banking alerts, delivery notices and top-up confirmations by text. A well-written, expected message from a known business fits that habit.

Where SMS is the wrong tool

  • Long or visual content. A villa brochure, a menu or a product catalogue needs images and space. Send it as an email and use SMS to point to it.
  • High-frequency promotions. Texts feel personal. Daily promotional texts will drive opt-outs and complaints.
  • Contacts who never opted in. Under the Data Protection Act, 2020, texting people for marketing without consent, or outside the narrow existing-customer exception, breaches section 10. It also damages your brand quickly.

Use cases that tend to perform

SectorGood SMS useLeave to email
Hotels and villasArrival details, transfer times, flash offers to opted-in past guestsSeasonal newsletters, destination guides
Events and entertainmentTicket-release alerts, venue or line-up changesArtist features, post-event photo galleries
RetailWeekend or Boxing Day flash sales, click-and-collect noticesFull catalogues, loyalty statements

Combining the two channels usually beats either one alone. Our article on SMS and email campaigns together gives examples, and texting vs email compares the channels side by side.

Writing texts that get a response

An effective SMS names the sender in the first words, states one offer or piece of information, gives a deadline if there is one, and ends with the opt-out. For example: “[Villa name]: 2 nights for the price of 1, stays until 15 Dec. Book: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out.” Avoid all-capitals, several exclamation marks and shortened links from unknown services, which look like the scam texts many Jamaicans have learned to ignore.

How to test effectiveness for your business

  1. Pick one measurable goal, such as bookings from a flash sale or attendance at an event.
  2. Split the audience: send one segment an email only and another an email plus a reminder text.
  3. Use a trackable link or code in the SMS so that sales can be attributed.
  4. Check delivery reports. Mailpro’s SMS statistics show which numbers were delivered, which failed and why, so you can clean invalid +1-876 and +1-658 numbers from your list.
  5. Compare cost per result, not just open rates. SMS costs more per message than email, so it has to earn its place.

Timing tips for Jamaica

Send promotional texts on weekdays late morning or early evening, and avoid Sunday mornings for most audiences. For diaspora numbers, remember that Jamaica does not use daylight saving time, so between March and November New York and Toronto are one hour ahead of Kingston. Around public holidays such as Emancipation Day and Independence Day on 1 and 6 August, send your message a few days early, before people travel or head to the beach.

In Mailpro’s own customer survey, users rate SMS deliverability 9.8/10. To set up your first campaign, see SMS marketing in Jamaica or check SMS pricing.
