SMS can be very effective in Malta, but only when it is used for the right messages. Texts are read quickly and rarely filtered, yet the same immediacy makes an irrelevant text more annoying than an irrelevant email. This page helps you decide when SMS earns its cost.
Why SMS has an edge in Malta
- Near-universal mobile use: at the start of 2025 there were 781,000 cellular connections in Malta, equivalent to 144% of the population (DataReportal, 2025).
- Short distances, fast decisions: on a small island, a same-day offer is actionable; a customer in Mosta can be at your Naxxar shop within minutes.
- Tourist reach: visitors may not check email on holiday, but they see texts.
- No inbox competition: a text is not buried under promotions tabs.
Where SMS works best
| Message | Channel | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Appointment or table reminder | SMS | Time-sensitive, short |
| Flash sale today only | SMS | Urgency matches the channel |
| Monthly newsletter | Too long for SMS, needs images | |
| Booking confirmation for tourists | Both | Email for details, SMS for the essentials on the day |
| Christmas gift guide | Email, with an SMS nudge | Visual content, then a reminder |
Where SMS backfires
- Without consent: Malta’s S.L. 586.01 treats SMS as electronic mail, requiring prior written consent (or the soft opt-in for existing customers), for businesses as well as individuals. Unsolicited texts are also the fastest way to get complaints to the IDPC.
- Too often: more than a few marketing texts a month and opt-outs rise.
- At the wrong hour: a promotional text during Sunday lunch or late at night irritates people. Stick to reasonable hours in CET/CEST.
- With broken characters: Maltese letters such as ħ and ġ switch the message to Unicode encoding (70 characters per segment instead of 160), raising cost; check how the text will render.
A realistic example
A gelateria in Marsaxlokk with an opted-in list of local customers sends one text on a quiet weekday afternoon in July: “Hot day? Two scoops for the price of one until 20:00 today. Show this SMS. Reply STOP to opt out.” The message is short, local, time-limited and measurable, because staff count redeemed texts. That is the pattern that tends to work for SMS: relevant, immediate and easy to act on.
How to measure effectiveness
Mailpro reports delivery status for each message. To measure impact, add a short tracked link or a unique code (“Show this SMS for 10% off”) and compare against a control group that did not receive the text. See SMS statistics.
Combine SMS with email
The strongest results often come from using both. Send the full offer by email, then a short SMS reminder to those who did not open. Mailpro runs both channels from one account and one contact list. Our article on SMS and email campaigns together gives examples, and texting vs email compares the two.
The Mailpro angle
SMS deliverability is rated 9.8/10 in Mailpro’s own customer survey. Contacts and consent records are stored on Swiss infrastructure outside US jurisdiction, in a country with an EU adequacy decision. Start with SMS marketing in Malta and use your 500 free credits to test.
