The List-Unsubscribe header is an email header, defined in RFC 2369, that tells inbox providers how a recipient can opt out of a mailing — through either a mailto address or an https web link. Mailbox providers such as Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook read this header and show a native "Unsubscribe" button next to the sender name, so subscribers can leave without searching for a link inside the message.
How the List-Unsubscribe header works
The sending server adds the List-Unsubscribe header to every message, listing one or two opt-out methods: a web URL and, optionally, a mailto address. When it is paired with the List-Unsubscribe-Post header, it enables one-click unsubscribe (RFC 8058) — the provider processes the opt-out directly, without opening a landing page. Since February 2024, Gmail and Yahoo require a valid List-Unsubscribe header, with one-click support, from bulk senders.
Why the List-Unsubscribe header matters
A correct List-Unsubscribe header keeps senders compliant with these bulk-sender rules and protects deliverability. Giving people an easy exit lowers complaint rates, because a frustrated reader clicks "unsubscribe" instead of "report spam" — which would otherwise damage sender reputation and inflate your unsubscribe rate. Mailpro adds the header to every campaign automatically. Learn how to edit your unsubscribe link, read the one-click unsubscribe guide, or manage opt-outs from the unsubscribe management tools.
