Effectiveness in email is mostly about trust: mailbox providers must trust your domain, and readers must trust that what you send is worth their time. In a market as small as Malta, where word of mouth travels quickly between Valletta and Victoria, that trust is easy to lose. These seven habits help you keep it.

1. Only mail people who asked

Malta’s S.L. 586.01 requires prior written consent for marketing email, whether the recipient is a person or a company, with a soft opt-in exception for your own customers buying similar products. Consent-based lists also perform better: fewer spam complaints, fewer bounces, better inbox placement. If a list’s origins are unclear, run a re-permission email first. See permission to send email campaigns in Malta.

2. Authenticate your domain

Gmail, Yahoo and Microsoft increasingly reject or junk mail from domains without SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Set them up before your first campaign using Mailpro’s guide to SPF, DKIM and DMARC. It is especially important for .com.mt domains that also handle staff mail, because a poor sender reputation affects both.

3. Write subject lines for a bilingual reader

A Maltese reader may be happy in English but warm to a greeting in Maltese. Test a short Maltese touch, such as a festa reference or a seasonal “Il-Milied it-Tajjeb” at Christmas, against a plain English line. Keep subject lines short enough to read on a phone lock screen.

4. Time sends for Central European Time

Malta is on CET (UTC+1), moving to CEST (UTC+2) in summer. Local lists generally respond best during waking hours on weekdays, while tourist segments abroad need their own schedule. Avoid sending major promotions during the Santa Marija week in mid-August, when many residents are away or at the beach, unless the offer is about summer itself. Our FAQ on the best time to send a newsletter gives a testing framework.

5. Make one offer, clearly

A single call to action outperforms a crowded layout. A Sliema restaurant promoting a Notte Bianca menu should say that, show the menu and link to bookings. Use the button builder to make the action obvious on mobile.

6. Design for the phone first

Most Maltese subscribers read on mobile. Use single-column layouts, large tap targets and compressed images. All Mailpro templates are responsive, and you can preview the mobile version before you send.

7. Measure, then clean

Track opens, clicks and unsubscribes per segment. Remove hard bounces immediately and consider a sunset policy for contacts who have not opened in a year. Smaller, engaged lists deliver better, and because Mailpro prices by sends rather than contacts, a clean list also costs less to mail. For regulated sectors such as iGaming and financial services, also check that suppression lists (self-excluded players, closed accounts) are applied to every send.
