An effective campaign is one that makes the reader do something: book, buy, reply, register. For Barbadian senders, that usually means writing for a phone screen, timing around a Caribbean calendar, and respecting a data protection law that expects consent. Here are ten habits that help, drawn from what works for island businesses.
Before you write
1. Know who is on the list
A list that mixes Bajan residents with past visitors from Birmingham or Boston needs at least two versions of most messages. Tag contacts by origin at sign-up and use segmentation so locals get the Saturday market offer and overseas guests get the winter-season package.
2. Work from a calendar
Plan six months ahead around local and source-market dates. Locally: Errol Barrow Day (21 January), National Heroes Day (28 April), Emancipation Day (1 August), Crop Over and Grand Kadooment on the first Monday in August, and Independence Day (30 November). In source markets: the northern winter, US Thanksgiving, and UK and Canadian school holidays.
3. Check permission
Under the Data Protection Act 2019, promotional email needs a lawful basis, which in practice is almost always consent. If you are unsure about part of your list, read permission to send email campaigns before hitting send.
While you write
4. Make the subject line do one job
Say what the reader gets: “Your Crop Over weekend: 3 nights, airport transfer included” beats “Summer news”. Keep it short enough for a phone screen. Mailpro’s subject line generator can suggest variations to test.
5. Design for one thumb
Most of your readers are on mobile. Use one column, large buttons, short paragraphs and compressed images. Every Mailpro template is responsive. Test on a real phone over a mobile connection, not just office Wi-Fi.
6. Sound like a person from here
A warm, direct tone and local references (a named chef, a beach, a parish) build trust. Generic stock copy that could come from anywhere does not.
7. One message, one button
If the goal is bookings, the main button should say “Check availability”, not “Learn more”. Secondary links can sit lower down.
When you send
8. Send on Barbados time, or theirs
Barbados stays on UTC−4 all year. For locals, mid-morning or lunchtime on weekdays is a sensible starting point. For UK recipients, remember London is four or five hours ahead. Schedule each segment separately, then use your own data to refine. The best time to send FAQ covers how to test it.
9. Protect your deliverability
Authenticate your domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Remove hard bounces and include a visible unsubscribe link, since major inbox providers now require one-click unsubscribe for bulk mail. The Gmail and Yahoo sender requirements explain what changed.
After you send
10. Read the numbers and adjust
Look at opens by segment, clicks by link, and which countries engaged, then change one thing at a time. A hotel that sees its UK segment clicking in the evening, London time, can move that send. A retailer whose Independence sale email got clicks but no sales should look at the landing page, not the email.
Where Mailpro helps
Mailpro combines the editor, segmentation, scheduling, automation and statistics, and adds SMS for the time-critical follow-up. Your contact data is hosted in Switzerland, outside US jurisdiction, which makes it easier to document overseas transfers under the Barbados Act. See all features on the email campaigns in Barbados page.
