CASL (Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation) is a Canadian law, in force since 2014, that governs the sending of commercial electronic messages such as marketing emails. It is one of the world's strictest anti-spam laws: in most cases you need consent before emailing a Canadian recipient, and every message must identify the sender and offer a working unsubscribe.
How CASL works
CASL requires either express consent (the recipient clearly agreed to receive messages) or implied consent (for example, an existing business relationship within set time limits). Each commercial message must include accurate sender identification and a functioning unsubscribe mechanism that is honored quickly. Unlike the opt-out model of the US CAN-SPAM Act, CASL is fundamentally an opt-in regime, which is why express consent and double opt-in matter.
Why CASL matters for email
For anyone emailing contacts in Canada, CASL means keeping proof of consent, honoring unsubscribes fast, and identifying yourself clearly — with significant penalties for violations. Capturing and recording consent cleanly is the key. Read about permission marketing, learn the difference between opt-in and double opt-in, or set up double opt-in in Mailpro.
