UTM parameters are small tags added to the end of a link — such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign — that tell web analytics tools where a visitor came from. In email marketing, they let you see in Google Analytics (or similar) exactly which campaign, list or link drove a click, visit or sale.

How UTM parameters work

A UTM-tagged link adds a query string after the URL, for example utm_source=newsletter, utm_medium=email and utm_campaign=spring-sale. When someone clicks, the analytics tool reads those tags and groups the visit under that source, medium and campaign. The five standard parameters are source, medium, campaign, term and content. Consistent naming is essential — otherwise the same campaign appears under several labels and your click-through and conversion reports fragment.

Why UTM parameters matter

UTM parameters connect email activity to what happens after the click, so you can measure real outcomes and email marketing ROI rather than just opens and clicks. They are the backbone of campaign monitoring and attribution. Mailpro tracks clicks inside each campaign and works alongside your analytics tags.
