“Dear Customer” does not win attention in a crowded Indian inbox. Neither, any longer, does a first name on its own. Personalisation that works in India uses what you know about a reader’s place, language, culture and history to change what they actually see. Here are the fields worth collecting and the ways to use them.

Personalisation fields that matter in India

FieldHow to use it
City or pin codeShow delivery times, local store events or city-specific offers
Preferred languageSend an English, Hindi or regional-language version
Festivals celebratedSend Onam, Pongal, Durga Puja, Eid or Christmas greetings to those who celebrate them
Payment preferenceReassure COD customers; highlight prepaid benefits where relevant
Last category purchasedRecommend related products
Role or industry (B2B)Tailor case studies for IT, BFSI, manufacturing or healthcare readers

In Mailpro, you add these as custom contact fields and insert them into your content or use them to build segments.

Ideas you can use this season

  • Festival-aware greetings: instead of sending everyone the same Diwali email, send regional greetings to the customers who told you which festivals they celebrate.
  • City-aware logistics: “Order by Thursday for delivery in Hyderabad before the weekend” is more useful than a generic countdown.
  • Language-aware subjects: a Hindi subject line for Hindi-preferring subscribers, following our subject line tips.
  • Behaviour-aware content: readers who clicked on a product category last month see it first this month.

Collect data the right way

Personalisation depends on personal data, which the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 regulates. Ask only for what you will use, explain why in your sign-up notice, and let people update or delete their details. Avoid inferring sensitive information such as religion from names; ask about festival preferences as an optional, clearly explained choice, or rely on what customers tell you directly. Anyone under 18 needs verifiable parental consent under the Act.

Keep it human

Over-personalisation can feel intrusive. Mentioning a customer’s neighbourhood or last purchase is helpful when it saves them time; it is uncomfortable when it seems to reveal tracking they did not expect. Test with colleagues before sending.

Measure the lift

Run a simple test: send half a segment a personalised version and half a generic one, then compare clicks in your campaign statistics. Add a clear call-to-action button so you are comparing like with like.
