When a Barbadian business connects a website, booking engine, accounting package or client portal to an email service, there are two main options: SMTP, the standard email protocol, or an API, a web interface your developers call directly. Both deliver email reliably through Mailpro. The right choice depends on what your system already supports, how much control you need, and who maintains the integration.

When SMTP is the right choice

  • Your software already has an “SMTP settings” screen. This is the case for many hotel property-management systems, WooCommerce and WordPress sites, accounting packages and CRMs.
  • You need to move quickly and don’t have a developer on staff, which is common for small Barbadian businesses.
  • You only need to send, not to sync contacts or pull data back.

Mailpro’s SMTP server supports authentication, TLS 1.3 encryption and message tracking.

When the API is the right choice

  • You are building or maintaining your own application, such as a fintech platform, a membership portal or a tour-booking site.
  • You want the email platform and your database to stay in sync: new customers added automatically, unsubscribes flowing back.
  • You want webhooks, so your system knows immediately when a message bounces or is delivered.
  • You also want to send SMS to +1-246 and overseas numbers from the same integration.

Using both

Many organisations do. A resort might send PMS confirmations over SMTP while its developers use the API to sync the loyalty database and pull campaign statistics into a dashboard. Mailpro accounts support both at the same time. Our article on SMTP relay vs email API covers the technical trade-offs in more depth.

Common setups in Barbados

A small hotel or guesthouse

The property-management system and website booking plugin both have SMTP settings. Pointing them at Mailpro takes an afternoon and needs no developer. Marketing newsletters are then built in the Mailpro interface, not through either method.

An online retailer

A WooCommerce or Shopify store sends order emails over SMTP or through a Mailpro plugin. Newsletter sign-ups at checkout are synchronised to a Mailpro list, using the marketing checkbox as the consent signal.

A fintech or corporate-services platform

The development team uses the API for everything: client notifications with per-message status stored in an audit log, webhooks for bounces, and contact synchronisation with the client database. SMTP stays in reserve for legacy tools that cannot call an API.

Questions to ask before you decide

  • Does the software you already use offer SMTP settings, a Mailpro plugin, or neither?
  • Who will maintain the integration in a year: an in-house developer, an agency or nobody?
  • Do you need to prove delivery of individual messages, for example for invoices or regulatory notices?
  • Must unsubscribes and bounces flow back into another system automatically?
  • Will you also send SMS from the same application?

If most answers point to “no developer, just send”, choose SMTP. If they point to integration and automation, choose the API. Mixed answers usually mean both.

A note on hosting and the law

Whichever method you choose, the personal data in your emails is handled by your email provider. It doesn’t matter whether the provider is reached by SMTP or API; what matters under the Data Protection Act 2019 is where that data goes and how it is protected. The Act restricts transfers outside Barbados to destinations with adequate protection or appropriate safeguards. Mailpro processes and stores data in Switzerland, on private infrastructure outside US jurisdiction. Switzerland is covered by an EU adequacy decision. Neither SMTP nor API email needs marketing consent for genuinely transactional messages, but anything promotional follows the rules in our Barbados email law guide.

Still unsure?

Start with SMTP if your software supports it, then add the API when you need more control. Read what SMTP is for background, or see the SMTP vs API FAQ.

Documentation and resources for developers

All the technical documentation of the Mailpro APIs lives on the developer portal: Email API v2, CRM API v3 and SMS API, described endpoint by endpoint (OpenAPI), in English and five other languages.

  • Delivery tracking of transactional emails — every single send returns an identifier; GET /Send/{id}/Status tells you whether it is queued, sent, delivered, deferred or bounced. In detail.
  • Webhooks — three directions: Mailpro notifies you (email delivered, bounce, new contact…), your automations call your tools, an external tool triggers an automation. The three types of webhooks · reference.
  • Frequently asked questions — authentication, limits, attachments, Zapier / Make / n8n: API & Webhooks FAQ.
