Sooner or later, every Jamaican business with a website, booking engine or customer portal needs to send email automatically. There are two main ways to connect your system to a sending service: the SMTP protocol, which almost every piece of software already supports, and an API, which gives developers more control. Mailpro supports both. Here is how to choose.
The difference in one paragraph
SMTP is the standard protocol that has carried email between servers for decades. Your software connects to Mailpro’s SMTP server with a username and password and hands over the message. An API is a web interface: your application sends a request containing the message and its settings, and receives a structured response, such as an identifier for tracking. Both deliver email through the same Mailpro infrastructure.
Side-by-side comparison
| Criterion | SMTP | API |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Change settings in existing software; no code | Requires development work |
| Compatibility | Works with WordPress, accounting and ERP tools, printers and scanners | Best for custom apps and platforms |
| Tracking | Delivery and engagement statistics in your Mailpro account | Per-message status and webhooks returned to your own system |
| Templates and personalisation | Usually built in your own software | Can use Mailpro templates and personalisation fields |
| Contact management | Not included | CRM API can add and update contacts |
Scenarios from Jamaica
A guest house with a WordPress site
The booking plugin already sends confirmation emails, but they often land in spam. Choose SMTP: enter Mailpro’s SMTP details in the site’s mail settings and authenticate the domain. Setup takes minutes.
An online store shipping sauces and coffee to the diaspora
The shop platform supports SMTP, but the owner wants to know exactly which order confirmations were delivered. Either route works; the API adds per-message status, which helps customer service answer “I never got my receipt” queries from customers in New York or London.
A credit union building a member app
The development team needs one-time codes, statements-ready alerts and delivery confirmations fed back into their system. Choose the API with webhooks, and keep promotional content separate.
A software company serving overseas clients
A Kingston-based developer building a platform for clients abroad needs sending at scale, with results stored in their own database. The API fits, and statistics can be pulled into dashboards as described in API statistics.
Questions to ask before you decide
- Who will maintain it? If you rely on an outside developer, an SMTP setting in off-the-shelf software is easier to hand over than custom API code.
- Do you need the result inside your own system? If staff must see “delivered” next to each order or booking, the API and webhooks are worth the effort.
- How many systems send email? A website, an accounting package and a booking engine can all share one Mailpro SMTP account, each with its own credentials.
- Will volumes spike? A festival ticket release or a Boxing Day sale can generate thousands of confirmations within an hour. Both routes handle bursts, but plan ahead and test with realistic volumes before the big day.
Security and data protection
Whichever route you choose, the personal data inside your emails is covered by Jamaica’s Data Protection Act, 2020, which requires appropriate security and limits transfers to countries without adequate protection. Mailpro processes data in Switzerland, outside US jurisdiction, with TLS 1.3 encryption in transit. Use unique credentials for each application, store them securely and rotate them if a staff member leaves.
Deliverability is the same job either way
Neither route will fix a poorly authenticated domain. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, use a consistent sender address and keep transactional and marketing streams separate. Our article on SMTP relay vs email API covers the technical trade-offs further.
Summary
- Choose SMTP when you want to connect existing software quickly without code.
- Choose the API when you are building an application, need per-message tracking or want to manage contacts programmatically.
- Many businesses use both: SMTP for the website and accounting system, API for the app.
